An agenda is an absolute must and it should be brief but as explicit as possible so that attendees know what the meeting will cover. Minutes of the meeting need to be detailed enough that it can be seen what was discussed, in addition to what actual motions were passed. On the other hand, details of who said what can be embarrassing; it is better to capture the ideas and leave out the authors. Finally, the action points should be explicitly recorded and the minutes sent out as soon as possible so that people are reminded what jobs they have to do before the next meeting and given plenty of time to do them. And the date of the next meeting should be decided before the meeting ends to minimize the organizational task of finding a date that suits most people. Aim for the meeting to take no more than an hour - that should be long enough for a productive meeting.

Way to go Lisa! I've attended so many meetings without an Agenda. Even after the meeting was over I didn't know why I was there. Follow-up also makes for an effective meeting. One more thing no one wants to attend a meeting where one person does all of the talking.
